Hawk Creek Animal Shelter
The Humane Society of Meeker & Kandiyohi Counties (HSKMC) is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected, abandoned, and stray animals. Additionally, we strive to educate the community on responsible animal care and advocate for the spaying and neutering of companion animals.
Their organization began in the early 1970s alongside the veterinary practice of Drs. Molnau and Olson. The partnership persisted until September 2002, when the HSKMC assumed responsibility for the location previously occupied by the Small Animal Clinic on Trott Avenue. On October 1, 2003, that building was sold, leaving the HSKMC without a home. However, on March 1, 2004, we reopened in a facility that had been used to store snow plows, and ultimately, on October 28, 2009, we found our permanent residence in a spacious 5,000+ square foot building, purposefully designed to accommodate and care for animals.
Their funding comes from a set amount provided by Kandiyohi County, Meeker County, and the City of Willmar, specifically for the impoundment and boarding of stray animals. Animals are held for five days, allowing their owners the opportunity to reclaim them at the HSKMC. After this period, the HSKMC takes over the responsibility for each animal's care and expenses. Furthermore, we receive funding through adoptions, pet claims, donations, fundraisers, and various promotions.
Their expenses include essential supplies for animal care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, microchipping, along with numerous miscellaneous costs, facility maintenance, and salaries for staff tasked with caring for the animals in our shelter.
The financial support and manpower provided by donors and volunteers are crucial to the HSKMC's operations. Through their volunteer program, they've been able to give many animals a second chance, provide discounts on spaying and neutering, and offer adults and teens a safe environment to complete community service. They also implement educational programs in schools and conduct supervised tours.
